Differences between Invisalign and Metal Braces - Lakeville Invisalign - Infographic

Differences between Invisalign and Metal Braces - Lakeville Orthodontists - Invisalign Lakeville

lakeville invisalign

Invisalign vs Metal Braces

1 – Comfort

Invisalign tends to be more brackets and wires that make up metal braces can end up poking your cheeks.

2 – Visibility

Invisalign is simply a clear tray you wear over your teeth

3 – Food Restrictions

Invisalign is removed for eating so it doesn't require the same food restrictions as metal braces

4 – Oral Hygiene

Invisalign aligners are removable. It is simple to pop them out and clean your teeth effectively. You can brush and floss as usual.  Braces can trap food particles, increasing the chance of decay.

We offer invisalign Lakeville Orthodontics, as well as braces. There are pros and cons to each. We offer a free consultation where you can learn more about your options. Feel free to give us a call at 952-435-4000.

6 Easy Tips to Take Care of Your Teeth

October 22nd, 2014

6 Easy Tips to take care of your Teeth - Before, During and After Orthodontic Treatment

1 - If you can't find your floss during the day, opt hard, crunchy foods, such as carrots and apples, can clean your teeth naturally.

2 - Make sure you are brushing and flossing twice-a-day – every day!

3 - See your dentist every six months.

4 - Rinse out your mouth with mouthwash, or at least water, after every meal.

5 – Increase calcium intake.  Eating foods such as yogurt, cheese and soybeans will keep your teeth strong.

6 - Avoiding sugary foods. Foods high in sugar, like candy (particularly the sticky types), convert to acids inside your mouth and can cause the harmful decay you're trying to avoid.

6 Things to know BEFORE getting Braces

September 9th, 2014

6 Things to know BEFORE getting Braces

1. Best age to be seen is age 7.

Magic Number 7 -  According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the best age for children to be seen by an orthodontist for the first time is 7.  Most problems can be identified by that age. Many times treatment is not needed at this early age, but seeing a patient at this early age can help to properly prepare for treatment in the future.

2. Your "bite" is as important as the straightness and aesthetics of your teeth.

One of the most important things to look at is your “bite” or the way the top and bottom teeth meet. If there are problems with your bite we can use many orthodontic treatments so that you can have a beautiful and healthy smile.

3. An Orthodontist has a lot more training than a Dentist.

Orthodontists are specially trained in tooth movement and jaw function; dentists are not. Yes, some dentists have taken a few course hours to learn how to do Invisalign or other types of treatment, but that is not the main thing that they do. Would you get heart surgery from a doctor who only operated on hearts once or twice a year? Of course not! Orthodontists first go to dental school and become dentists. Then they attend an Orthodontic program for several more years to learn specifically about tooth movement, jaw function, and facial aesthetics. After that, they take a special exam to become Board Certified.

4. Cost and treatment times vary

There are many variables that affect this.

5. You will need to take good care of your teeth

Why bother to spend thousands of dollars and years of your time on your teeth, and then ignore your oral hygiene? When you have braces, you will need to brush your teeth several times per day, ideally after every meal.

6. You will need to wear retainers afterward

Yes, that's true! You will have to wear a retainer forever to ensure your teeth stay straight.

Feel free to contact us with any questions or to set up your complimentary consultation.

Simple Steps to take Care of a Retainer after Orthodontic Treatment Lakeville

July 29th, 2014

Simple Steps to take Care of a Retainer after Orthodontic Treatment

How long will you need to wear your retainer? Forever.

Yes, we know that forever sounds like a long time. Your retainer ensures that your teeth will not move back into their old crooked positions. We have seen many adults quit wearing their retainer after a few years and end up having to go through the entire braces process again. It is best to just keep wearing your retainer to ensure your teeth won't move.

Keep your retainer in a retainer case.

Don't wrap it in a tissue. This is the most common way that retainers get thrown out. Have you heard the horror stories someone losing their retainer and digging through garbage cans for their retainer? Yuck! It's best to just use the case to ensure you always know where it is and don't end up throwing it away.

It is important to keep your retainers clean.

Like your teeth, your retainers can get a buildup of bacteria and white plaque. You must clean your retainers every single night. It is best to clean them with a bacteria-killing product like Retainer Brite, SonicBrite, or DentaSoak. You can brush your retainers with a toothbrush and toothpaste, but this will not adequately kill the bacteria. A good retainer cleaning product will ensure that your retainers stay clean and fresh smelling.

The simple tips above on taking care of your retainer will keep that smile of yours smiling. :)  Of course, you have any retainer issues, be sure to check in with either of our Lakeville Orthodontics offices at any time.

5 Tips to Avoid Plaque with your Braces Lakeville Orthodontics

5 Tips to Avoid Plaque with your Braces Lakeville Orthodontics

braces lakeville

Brush Regularly - Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste is vital to a healthy mouth. Make sure you softly brush all the surfaces of your teeth.

Floss Daily - A simple daily flossing between teeth clears away plaque before it can cause damage and can also clean plaque at the gum line. Plaque is known to reach the spaces between teeth.

Don't skip the Dentist - Consider visiting your dentist at least twice a year or as recommended by your dentist, and you have a lower chance of getting cavities while wearing braces.

Stop Avoiding Fruits & Veggies - Believe it or not, there are foods out there that play a key role in keeping plaque off our teeth. They include apples, carrots, cucumbers and other raw fruits and vegetables. You can still eat these types of fruits and veggies if you have braces, but be sure to cut them up into bite sized pieces to avoid breaking off brackets.

Avoid giving into your Sweet Tooth - Consuming sugary drinks or eating candy or other junk food allows sugar to stick to our teeth. The bacteria, then, becomes plaque, which turns into acid and damages teeth.

The above 5 habits will help keep your plaque in check and your mouth as healthy as can be during your orthodontic treatments here at Lakeville Orthodontics.

How to Ease the Pain of poking wires on Braces - Lakeville Orthodontics

May 20th, 2014

poking wires on braces

How to ease the pain of poking wires on braces

See If You Can Push It Back Into Place

Sometimes you can just use a finger to push it back into place. Other times, you can guide the wire back into the tube.

When In Doubt, Wax It!

This should be able to blunt the wire comfortably until you can come in and get it fixed professionally.

Bend The Wire To Guard Against The Pointy End

Usually, you can curve the wire into a position where it’s resting against your gums or teeth.

Schedule an appointment!

Don't hesitate to call our office and come in to get this fixed.

It is our goal at Lakeville Orthodontics to make your experience with your braces the most comfortable as possible.  This includes helping ease the pain of poking wires on braces.

Lakeville Orthodontics & Smiley Riley visited Elementary Schools in the Lakeville area

April 17th, 2014

Lakeville Orthodontics & Smiley Riley visited Elementary Schools

Here is a slideshow presentation of some of our visits to the Elementary schools in the Lakeville area.  We do this for National Children's Dental Health Month.

What is National Children's Dental Health Month?  Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. NCDHM messages and materials have reached millions of people in communities across the country.  Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

We like to have fun in our offices, but we also love getting out in the community.   It was so fun to see all the children's smiling faces, to teach them the importance of taking care of their teeth. The kids especially enjoyed their visit from Smiley Riley!  Enjoy the video and let us know if you'd like to have Lakeville Orthodontics visit your school next year.

What to do the First Days after Braces Treatment - Orthodontist Lakeville

March 18th, 2014

What to Do the First Days After Braces Treatment

(Orthodontist Lakeville)

Congratulations on your journey to straighter teeth, correcting your bite and improving your dental health!  However with your new dental appliance, adjustments will be made.  First off, particularly just after you have your braces fitted an odd feeling of having something in your mouth that you cannot remove.  Soreness may set in on the second and third day when the braces are beginning to modify to correct your bite.  Most likely, by the third day your braces will now be a part of you.  They just take a little bit of getting used to.

Here are a few tips to help you through your first days after braces:

#1 Eat soft foods for the first few days

Soft foods are your best nutrition for the first few days after getting your braces.  In order to satisfy your stomach eat foods that do not cause much friction in your mouth - mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, soup, scrambled eggs, ice cream and yogurt, among others.  These foods are easy on your mouth and do not put much pressure on your teeth to eat.

#2 Use warm saltwater rinse, as needed

A proven and tested solution to ease soreness in the mouth is to rinse it with saltwater.  The saturated saline solutions relieve the swelling in the mouth.  It also reduces inflammation and holds bacteria at bay to improve your dental health.  A good proportion for the solution is to mix 1 tsp of salt to a cup of warm water.

#3 Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen

Taking the recommended dosage of over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen, can further ease the pain can also be helpful.

#4 Put wax over any problem areas

It's not just your teeth that will be adjusting with your braces.  Your cheeks and tongue, as well, as these will rub against the braces.  In such cases, sore spots may develop in your mouth.  These can be relieved with the orthodontic wax what is provided in your braces kit provided by your orthodontist.  Apply the wax generously for comfort by squashing it between your fingers and firmly press to the brackets.  Avoid stroking your sores with your tongue or even fingers because it will hurt more.

With the above, these should get you by for the first few days after your braces.  However, when pain persists, do not hesitate to consult us for proper adjustments.

Foods to Avoid with Braces - Orthodontics Lakeville

January 14th, 2014

Foods to Avoid with Braces

When you are wearing braces, it is inevitable that you stay away, or at least minimize consumption of certain food and drink types to keep our braces intact while still giving us sufficient daily nutrients during treatment.  The primary reason for avoiding some foods is to keep from loosening or breaking the braces.  A broken bracket may add to the length of treatment, so you would rather avoid that happening.

Here are few of the food types to avoid:

#1 Sticky Foods and Candies

Chewy sweets may stick to the brackets and pull it off.  Apart from brackets breaking off, wires may also get damaged.  Sweet foods and drinks also invite tooth decay.  The sugar could stick to your teeth where bacteria could thrive and hurt your teeth.  Oral hygiene while wearing braces should be given extra attention to avoid further oral conditions.  Be sure to brush your teeth after eating or drinking sweets and if this is not possible, rinse off with water.

#2 Hard Foods

For obvious reason – break the brackets or bands of the braces, hard foods should be avoided.  Eating hard foods like pizza crust, bagels, and nuts, among others.  Wires may also get bent extending the period of wearing braces.  Hard foods may also cause pain to gums while you’re chomping down on it.

Some fruits and vegetables are hard like apples and carrots.  These are good for one’s health but does that mean we have to avoid them while wearing braces?  Not necessarily. You can modify the size of what you put into your mouth.  Cut fruits into wedges or small slices so they are manageable and will overwhelm the braces.  Vegetables should be done in a similar manner – thinly sliced consequently avoiding breakage of the braces.   Chew foods with the back of your teeth.

When craving for corn, make sure you remove it from the cob.  Do not bite off with your front teeth as it will damage your braces.  For pizzas and pretzels or bagels, you may heat it in the microwave oven to soften it.  And when itching to reach for chips, break them off into small pieces before chewing them with your molars.

There may be challenges of what food to eat when one is wearing braces however bearing in mind on ways to avoid impact of the food you put in your mouth and your dental appliance, you may still be able to enjoy foods that are advised to be avoided.  When signs of damage happen to your braces set up an appointment right away.  If you are ever wondering, you can always give us a call with any questions or concerns at our Lakeville Orthodontics office.

White Spot Lesions - How to Prevent - Orthodontics Lakeville

November 26th, 2013

White Spot Lesions - How to Prevent? - Orthodontics Lakeville

One of the most special times at Lakeville Orthodontics is when a patient gets their braces taken off! The only exception that can put a damper on this celebration is when a patient discovers they have white spot lesions.

orthodontics lakeville White Spot Lesions

White spot lesions (also called decalcification or demineralization) are caused by dental plaque (the same thing that causes cavities). The white, chalky marks on the teeth appear when acids created by the plaque remove minerals from the tooth surface and change the way it reflects light. The most common area for white spot lesions is between the gums and the brackets where brushing is most difficult. Many times white spots develop under swollen gum tissue making their detection difficult until after the braces are removed and swelling subsides. Although braces DO NOT cause white spots on the teeth, they do complicate the removal of the plaque which is responsible. However, the material we use to cement the brackets does have low risk of decalcifying the tooth.

Can white spot lesions be prevented? Yes. Plaque removal is the only SURE way to prevent white spot lesions. A low acidic diet, brushing twice daily with fluorinated toothpaste, flossing daily, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day will keep plaque off your teeth! Without plaque, the white spot lesions cannot form.

What to do if there are white spots when your braces come off? Keep your teeth clean and allow the white spots to improve with time, minor ones may even disappear altogether. Sometimes we will recommend a re-mineralization paste called MI Paste in the hopes that is will re-calcify the white spots to make them less noticeable. Bleaching is another method that lightens the enamel surrounding white spot lesions and helps blend the white spots in.

Preventing white spots during your braces is simple: keep dental plaque off of your teeth and white spot lesions will never ruin your deband celebration!

5 Parts of Braces Explained - Braces Lakeville

#1: Bracket

Brackets are connected to the bands, or directly bonded on the teeth, and hold the archwire in place.

#2: Metal Bands

The band is a cementing ring of metal which wraps around the tooth.

#3: Archwires

The archwire is tied to all of the brackets and creates force to move teeth into proper alignment.

#4: Elastic Hooks and Rubber Bands

Elastic hooks are used for the attachment of rubber bands, which help move the teeth toward their final position.

#5: Ligature

The archwire is held to each bracket with a ligature, which can either be a tiny elastic or a twisted wire.

Where did you grow up?

Grew up in Bloomington- I have lived in Bloomington for MOST of my life- I went to Assumption grade school where I was famous for losing a basketball game because I made a basket for the WRONG team-yep, that’s me. I then became a “CoStar” at Holy Angels where they even let me continue my basketball career (for a few years anyways). Did I mention I am 5’2?

What other jobs did you have prior to this one? (Jobs that are not in the dental field)

My 1st job was working at Country Club grocery store as a cashier. I also was a server at Arnold’s hamburger joint, hostess at an Olive Garden (I think I lasted 2 weeks), was the friendly face when you dropped off your dry cleaning at Clean-n-Press, and a Nanny, all before becoming a Dental Assistant at 22.

What is your favorite movie?  She’s Having a Baby (old 80’s movie with Kevin Bacon)

Favorite book?  Lord of the Flies

Favorite Musician/band?  Red Wanting Blue

Favorite restaurant?  Buster’s on 28th (in Minneapolis)

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?

My most favorite place is sitting on the dock at our cabin watching the kids swim in the summer. Spending my winter’s in local hockey rinks cheering my kids on and spending time with good friends.

Tell us about your life now:

I live in Bloomington (shocker) and I’m happily married to this great guy named Todd. We have 2 kids- Riley is 11 ½ and Roman is 9 ½. They both play hockey and lacrosse for Bloomington.  I’ve been lucky enough to find a great place to work for over 12 years. Life for me may be boring and uncomplicated to some, but for me, that is the way I like it :-)

Be sure to come say hi to Becky the next time you are in Lakeville Orthodontics!

My Experience with Insvisalign – Loved it!

April 15th, 2013

My Experience with Invisalign – Loved it!

Back when I was 13 years old I had braces, headgear, rubber bands, the whole works.  All of this was done in 4 ½ years.  It made a huge difference and I loved my teeth.  Fast forward, 30+ years later, I had stopped wearing my retainer completely and if I tried it would not even fit.  My bottom teeth became very over-crowded and because of this I had huge spaces between my back teeth where food would get caught all the time.

I decided to have my teeth looked at by Dr. Robert Miller and I was amazed at how much damage my crooked teeth were actually causing me.  It was actually more of a health issue that would affect me long-term if I did not do something.  I was not thrilled about the idea of braces, so Dr. Miller said I actually qualified to use invisalign.  I was happy about this, but still nervous about how I would look and speak.

The process of getting invisalign was easy!  I was amazed!  I had to go in and get a mold taken of my teeth.  Then they created the invisalign trays.  I came back a couple weeks later to get my first ones fit.  They were not even bulky like my retainers had been.  They were comfortable and it was easy to speak.  I was told to change out my trays every 2 weeks, so I did very consistently.  Then, every couple months I went back into Dr. Miller’s office to get my next few.  It was such a smooth system!

What I liked most?

  • Barely hurt at all (just a little when I put on a new tray)
  • Easy to speak
  • Most people never even knew I had invisalign…they were not noticeable
  • Lost weight (yes, it can be a weight loss system;)…ate less because I did not want to remove them)

What I liked least?

  • Having to remove them to eat (this is a benefit and a negative, as stated above)
  • Keeping track of them when eating.  This is perfect for adults or responsible teenagers, but it is a responsibility!  I know my kids would have lost them all the time.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend invisalign and Dr. Robert Miller for any of your teeth straightening needs.  If you are an adult and unsure about the process, just contact Lakeville Orthodontics for a consultation!

What's Your Type of Braces?

April 4th, 2013

What's Your Type of Braces?

Braces are not the only option to straighten your teeth.  There are actually many choices, more than just the normal braces.  A good orthodontic office will give you choices.  There are different types of braces that you may be recommended to wear, depending on treatment needs and your preferences.  Not all patients would fall on the similar category of having the need to straighten their teeth.  It is a case-to-case scenario.  Orthodontists are coming up with better ways of straightening teeth with braces every year!

  1. Traditional metal braces.  The commonly used braces involving brackets glued to each tooth.  This system can be provided by any orthodontist.
  2. Ceramic braces.  These are not as visible compared to the metal braces.  A bit more expensive, these type of braces is not as durable as the metal braces however it would look great.
  3. Lingual braces.  These are attached behind the teeth and not at all visible when you smile.  More expensive than traditional metal braces but it does the job without others knowing you're wearing one.
  4. Invisalign.  These are virtually invisible.  Alignment trays are created from molds and it do the job of straightening the teeth.  It can be removed for brushing and flossing.   These are the Cadillac of braces.

Contact us today for a free consultation to see what type of braces is right for you!  Be sure to head over and like us on Facebook too!

It amazes us, not only at how they look, but also in how much our clients shine inside and out after they have that beautiful smile!  Some of our kids don't even look the same because they have had incredible growth spurts over the couple years they had their braces.  It is just amazing!

Below is a video that shared before and after of a few of our patients.  Enjoy!

What Types of Foods are Safe for Braces?

What Types of Foods are Safe for Braces?

braces lakeville

Wearing braces will get us straighter teeth, a lovely smile and improved oral health.  The length of time you have to wear you braces would depend on the extent of repair to be done to your teeth.  You can still eat the majority of foods you love, but keep in mind to consume the right kind of foods and drinks help to avoid damage to your braces.  You will want to avoid foods that may loosen or break your braces.

Here are a few foods to steer clear of:

  • Hard rolls and bagels
  • Beef jerky
  • Raw or hard vegetables and fruits like carrots and wedges of apples
  • Corn on the cob
  • Soft drinks
  • Hard treats such as candies, popcorn and even gum
  • Nuts

Ideal foods to eat when one is wearing braces are soft foods that are easy to chew.  These prevent hard impact on the braces and help prevent breaking or damaging the dental appliance.  When your braces have just been adjusted, there is a tendency of soreness in the mouth.  Soft foods will provide your nutrition.

Below are few examples of the types of foods you can eat when wearing braces:

  • Cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding and custard
  • Pancakes
  • Muffins without nuts or chunky parts
  • Pasta
  • Most seafood
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Smoothies
  • Ice cream malts

Here is an additional list of STICKY FOODS and CANDIES that you should AVOID:

  • Marshmallow products
  • Gum
  • Taffy
  • Caramel Pieces
  • Dots
  • Caramel Corn
  • Jelly Beans
  • Milk Duds
  • Gummy Bears
  • Bit-O-Honey
  • Fruit Roll-ups
  • Raisins
  • Licorice
  • Jujubes
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Slo Pokes
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Sugar Babies

  • Chewing on Pencils, Pens, Open Hair Pins, or Barrettes
  • Corn Nuts
  • Hard Nuts
  • Beef Jerky
  • Hard Candy
  • Peanut M&M’s
  • Jaw Breakers
  • SweeTarts
  • Peanut Brittle

Here is a list of foods to MODIFY:

  • Apples – Cut into slices
  • Corn on the Cob – Cut off the cob
  • Ice – Don’t chew on it
  • Raw Carrots – Thin or Small Pieces
  • Hard Crusty Pizza, Chips, etc – Break or cut into small pieces
  • French Bread, Tacos, Bagels, etc – Break or Cut into small pieces

The bottom line is to just be careful when choosing the foods to have while you have braces.  Just remember that your braces are temporary and you will be able to eat your favorite foods again!

Lakeville Orthodontics loves supporting our Business Community!

January 29th, 2013

As we continue our interview with Dr. Bowlby of Lakeville Orthodontics he talks about how our business is all about relationships.  We’re in the community with sports activities, the plays all the things you know. We could go advertise in magazines and do all these things that are just great for certain businesses but for our business, they’re not.  Our business is about the community and the community is typically about kids and the things that are going on so they want to see that we’re active there so we’d like to put up the teams we sponsor, programs that we’ve been involve in and we take pride in that.  It’s a give-take; you know it works both ways.  We love to help them but then they also support us I think and they have trust in us that we’re, we know what we’re doing there.  So the relationship building is huge.

Lakeville Orthodontics loves building relationships in the local community and strive to do that!

Important things Parents want to Know about Lakeville Orthodontics

January 15th, 2013

We are continuing the interview with Dr. Scott Bowlby of Lakeville Orthodontics.  He states that one of the important things a parent is looking for when they come to the door is number 1 I think they want to come in and wants to see a professional-looking building.  I don’t think they want to see the Taj Mahal, but they also don’t want to see something that was built in the 1970s.  They want to see something clean and nice.  And then they want to be treated nicely – friendly staff, so again right there it starts with people and the relationships.

Our Orthodontics office prides ourselves on not only our cleanliness, but also our friendliness and professionalism.  We want each patient to enjoy their time with us and get the best results possible!

Older Kids have fun picking out their Bands at Lakeville Orthodontics!

December 28th, 2012

Dr. Bowlby talks about the fun kids have picking out their color bands to put on their braces.

That’s one thing right off about the t-shirts. We do a lot with the older kids with the Facebook, pictures, we really try to get on the cutting edge of that which I said I would never ever be on Facebook my entire life and here I am with 200 friends all of a sudden and a lot of them are 16-year olds but… so we’ll do that stuff. We have, you know when you get braces, there’s the color choices so they get the steel metal , tin gran or whatever we use to call them.  But now they can put little rubber bands around them that make them pink and red and green for St. Patrick’s Day, red for Valentine’s Day, red, white and blue for 4th of July; so the kids again, the younger kids for sure love that, it’s great. Sometimes we start running behind 5, 10, 15 minutes because the kid cannot make a choice on what color they’re going to get today.  But those are a lot of little things that are important that they like…

Meet the Doctors at Lakeville Orthodontics - Dr. Scott Bowlby and Dr. Robert Miller

December 10th, 2012

Dr. Bowlby discusses 'Dr. Time.'  We here at Lakeville Orthodontics really understand that patients want to have some time with the doctors.  With some businesses you will need see the doctor as much as we believe you should.  Cutting down on time with the doctor can sometimes be more cost effective, but nuts and bolts of the orthodontist business is relationships.  It is important to us and our patients.

The first visit Dr. Bowlby or Dr. Miller will spend five minutes or 20 minutes making sure that we get to know our new patient.  We love to hear about their hobbies, what they look to do for fun, how they like school and more.  Are they happy to be here?  And if not, how can we make you happy?  We strive to be sensitive to their needs.

Private Room for Adults at Lakeville Orthodontics - Invisalign Lakeville

November 28th, 2012

Lakeville Orthodontics is a lot of fun.  You get in the clinic and are met by children, laughter and antics.  Some adults may not like this scene but we come ready for them, we lead them to a quieter place next room where they can all go business-like with the doctor.

Most adults may not like the idea of wearing metal braces where restrictions come with it, not to mention pain and discomfort during adjustments.  Oral hygiene can be a challenge too if you’re wearing braces.  Nonetheless it will fix your bite and give you that perfect smile.  However Invisalign Lakeville provides you with a better option that does not completely change your lifestyle – no food restrictions, no difficulty in doing regular oral hygiene and less pain.

Getting invisalign may be more suitable option.  Few advantages are:

  • You are getting the treatment without obvious evidence that you are having one.  You cannot be called names because it does not show.
  • The appliance is safe and easy to use.  No sharp object that may snag and cut your oral tissues and cause more oral issues.
  • Dental visits are lesser and quicker freeing you more time.

Would you need more?  We can help you plan out the treatment that is best for you.  Correcting your bite and fixing your teeth alignment can go a long way.

Smile Your Way Back with Invisalign Lakeville!

November 19th, 2012

Invislign is a great product for the right patient.  Dr. Scott Bowlby discusses how great it has worked for his patients.

We can’t fully show off our smile and pearly whites if we are not comfortable enough with how our teeth look.  For a number of reasons, we tend to shy away and simply hide our smile.  Among these would be openbite, underbite, overbite and crowding of teeth.  We may have no control how these come about mainly it because these are inherited traits or we simply had habits when we were younger.

But not to worry, the above oral conditions may be corrected by orthodontist Farmington MN.  Orthodontics treatments are case to case basis but nonetheless open for everyone willing to change how they look and their outlook in life.  Orthodontics will give you a better smile.  You’ll have improved purposes of your teeth, not to mention better overall oral health conditions.

Traditional metal braces can correct your openbite, underbite, overbite and crowding of your teeth.  However invisalign Lakeville will correct your teeth without second look from peers and strangers due to your braces, sometimes with those colorful rubber bands.  Invisalign can begin to show your lovely smile as your teeth gradually set in place because the dental device does not seem to be there.  So it is a way better option in correcting teeth conditions.  Ask us now and show us that lovely smile in no time!

November is Movember! See who grows the better Mustache!

November 6th, 2012

Welcome to MOVEMBER!

Dr. Bowlby and Dr. Miller are starting to grow their ‘Staches’ to raise awareness and money to fight men’s health and more specifically men related cancers. Prostate cancer affects 1 in every 6 men in their lifetime. Nearly a quarter million are diagnosed every year.

For the month of November, they will be growing luxurious mustaches to raise funds (and make their team member’s laugh a little). At the end of the month, Dr. Bowlby’s orthodontic career may have to be put on hold because we have a feeling Burt Reynolds will be calling him for a stunt double.

Please help support the process by making a donation. Decide who can grow the better stache, Dr. Bowlby or Dr. Miller. We ask that with each vote, you donate $1 (or more) and in return Dr. Bowlby and Dr. Miller together will match your donations, up to $1000. Send in cash or a check written out to Movember to our office (18341 Orchard Trail, MN 55044) all donations will then be sent to Movember, PO Box 2726, Venice, CA 90294-2726

Thank you for supporting their efforts to change the face of men’s health. All donations are tax deductible.

If you would like to find out more about Movember visit http://us.movember.com

Our New SMILEYRILEY Club is Coming Soon!

February 1st, 2012

In just a few weeks we will be launching our exciting new CLUB.

Here at Lakeville Orthodontics,  we will soon offer a pre-orthodontic guidance program called SMILEYRILEY to all children that are not quite ready to start orthodontic treatment.  We have always offered this, but now we are deciding to create a fun club for children to feel more involved in their orthodontic experience. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends all children see an orthodontist by age 7.  As a preventative office,  we offer this service to your child at no cost because we know the importance of these growth guidance examinations.  Our orthodontic team will monitor any orthodontic need and optimum timing of treatment.

SMILEYRILEY members receive a special club t-shirt and a membership punch card.  Once in the club,  each member will receive a punch on their card at each visit for good oral hygiene and wearing their SMILEYRILEY club shirt.  It's a great way to start your experience with our office and team.

Once Treatment Starts at Lakeville Orthodontics...

January 25th, 2012

At Lakeville Orthodontics, we know that good oral hygiene is critical to the success of every orthodontic patient and can be one of the most challenging aspects of the orthodontic care.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="623" caption="Oral-B Ortho Essentials Program "]Brushing system[/caption]

That is why we have partnered with Crest and Oral B to offer a comprehensive oral hygiene education and grading system through our Ortho Essentials program.

Ortho Essentials is a three- step oral hygiene program designed to boost oral health and hygiene practices in orthodontic patients.  The day our patients get their braces on, our team will go over the importance of what foods to avoid, proper handling of emergencies and proper oral hygiene techniques.

In order to help with proper hygiene, our patients will receive the Oral-B Ortho Essentials kit and be started in our Ortho Essentials oral hygiene program.  Each patient kit includes the Oral-B Triumph power toothbrush with a SmartGuide wireless display to provide feedback on brushing time and technique, along with Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste, Rinse and SuperFloss to help reduce plaque and gingivitis. The kit will also include an easy to follow 5-level oral hygiene score card ranging form poor to excellent that illustrates each rating level so our clinical team and patients have a standard to compare oral hygiene.

Orthodontic Emergency Care

January 9th, 2012

We know orthodontic emergencies are never convenient nor timely. As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can’t take care of yourself. Common issues include broken appliances, poking or sharpness from brackets and wires, and general soreness.
While we always recommend you consult us if you experience these issues, you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you visit our office.

The following solutions may help you relieve discomfort:

  • General soreness: When you get your braces on, it is very common for you to feel general soreness in your mouth, and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days. This can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is severe, take over the counter aspirin or other headache/pain relief medication.
  • Poking wire: Placing wax on the poking edge of the wire is a great way to alleviate the discomfort.
  • Loose bracket or band: If your bracket or band is still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place and put wax on it. If the wire comes out entirely, wrap the bracket in a tissue, and call our office.
  • Loose or poor fitting headgear: For those patients prescribed headgear, it is important to use the appliance as instructed for the prescribed hours to avoid discomfort. Be sure to refer to the instructions provided by our office. If the facebow is bent, please call our office for assistance.

Remember, after alleviating your discomfort, it is still very important that you call our office to schedule a time to repair the problem.

The Halloween Buy Back is Coming Up!

October 21st, 2009

"Calling All Kids"

Lakeville Orthodontics
wants to buy your Halloween candy. Dr. Scott Bowlby and Dr. Robert Miller are putting their money where their mouths’ are. Why? Because they know the damaging effects of too much candy on children’s teeth, so what better way to get kids to hand over the candy…offer them CASH!
Monday November 2nd from 3-5pm

Lakeville Orthodontics is buying back all unopened Halloween candy, $1 per pound * In addition to cash, your children will also receive a new toothbrush (that glows) and a goody bag full of fun things. All candy collected will then be shipped to our TROOPS OVERSEAS.
